Being "At Cause"
Most of my life I have lived in the false perception that I am at the effect of circumstances. I was not aware that my fate, whether it be lucky or unfortunate had everything to do with my own energy.
The movie “The Secret” brought to crystal clarity what many of us would rather not want to hear: We are each 100 percent responsible for our experiences.
Quantum physics proves this notion repeatedly. Only when a particle is looked for, does it magically appear. This truth has also been said for thousands of years by the scriptures and prophets of all the religions, i.e. “Seek and You shall find”.
The problem is that we are mostly unconscious. We are unconscious of what we are attracting to ourselves. As we become fixated on what is happening to us that we don’t like, we are actually attracting more of it. For example with all the terrrible things we hear about on the news, we can easily become convinced that the world is cruel, and this belief draws to us “cruel experiences.”
But when we consciously apply this Law of Attraction principle, every negative experience becomes a fire underneath our rear to wake up! Instead of chalking up another time we were unfairly victimized, we ask ourselves, “How and why did I attract that?” By owning how our energy was out-of-balance in the first place, we become extremely motivated to get ourselves awake and back in-balance today.
To be in-balance is to be living “at Cause” instead of “at the effect of.” As soon as your mind goes into fear, you are out-of-balance, and you are beginning to attract negative experiences to yourself. In your reactive way of handling things, life becomes more and more complicated and stressful. The gift in these experiences is that they will show you how you are out-of-balance, and give you a stronger reason to retreat homeward into your peaceful center.
Stress is not caused by what happens to you—as it may appear, but from how you react to it. I am not talking about whitewashing reality. Life is no doubt deeply challenging. Yet, when you are living from your core, there is always gift to find. It doesn’t matter what the “reported bad news” may be. Victor Frankel who survived the Nazi concentration camps said “When we are no longer able to change a situation — we are challenged to change ourselves.” Victor modeled how deciding to keep a positive attitude through keeping a strong connection with his inner spirit caused his circumstances to eventually change for the better. The paradox is that when we give up trying to “control” what appears to be happening to us, and redirect our attention to what is happening within us, our outer situation usually does shift because we changed our relationship to it first.
Victor also said it this way, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
When we are living at the affect of our circumstances, we seem to have less and less choices, and the idea that our dreams can come true seems absolutely impossible. We have forgotten that we always have a space between what happens to us and how we respond. We become so busy in reaction, that we believe we have no time for ourselves. In this frantic state, we can judge others who appear lazy, when we may really envy them, “How can someone dare to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures, when we are so driven by our fear based obsession to accomplish.” and it is only a matter of time until our bodies break down and we become ill. This is the old paradigm of our society. We see it happening everywhere, and it is the main cause of our medical insurance being so expensive. Our rampant fear is literally killing us.
But the new paradigm has arrived. A growing number of us are learning to give ourselves the space and time to realize and respond to our own cause, our deeper sense of purpose. For many of us, it was a crisis that lead to this spiritual experience. For me, it was spending months in the hospital, that gave me the time I needed to let go of my fear based obsessions and enjoy the natural outpouring of my inner peace and loving. I rediscovered enjoying the moment as the highest priority. Everyone’s story is different, yet the theme is the same: Shifting from the stress of being “at effect,” to being 100 percent responsible for having a quality life, moment to moment.. It is deciding to wake up and take charge of one’s thoughts by focusing on what you really want to feel, and realizing that no matter what your circumstances are, you can begin to think these good thoughts now. No one has domain over your mind but you. No one can take away your peace. Only you can give it away by allowing yourself to be swept up in what is “wrong” or “bad.” No-one can block your creative process but you. As you tend the garden of your thinking well, you become a generator of good energy, and a magnet to good experiences.
To put it simply, the old paradigm goes with the quote, “I will believe it when I see it.” There is no creativity here. The reality of Creation says, “I will see it when I believe it”. When I believed in my mind and body that I wouldn’t get burned while walking on red hot flaming coals, I didn’t. But those times I made myself walk even through I had doubts, I got burned. In one case I was at cause, the other—at the effect of reactionary thinking.
How can you live at Cause all the time, so that your dreams can manifest? Instead of reacting to what appears wrong, you can make it your practice to stay connected to what feels right within you. Here are some inquiries to help keep you at cause. Inquiries are questions that are not meant to answered quickly from your rational mind. By remaining in the question for a period of time (perhaps while in meditation), answers can come from a deeper place, from the depths of your Soul.
A. Start the day off meditating or being with yourself and ask yourself one of the following questions each day, i.e. Monday question 1, Tuesday question 2, etc.
- “How can I be at-cause of my career today?”
- “How can I be at-cause of my relationship(s) today?”
- “How can I be at-cause of my health today?”
- “How can I be at-cause of my wealth today?”
- “How can I be at-cause of my happiness today?”
B. Once each week throughout the month ask these same five questions for the month time span…. i.e., “How can I be at cause in my career this month”
C. Once each month, ask one of these questions for the year.
To make it real for yourself, journal the answers that come from your depths, and ask your friends, coach, or mastermind group to hold you accountable to follow through with at-cause action steps.
This practice is amazing; It will keep you addressing the big picture and the many steps in between.
You are the cause of your life. Feel magic of your attention, and watch it grow.
